Agricultural Science is a broad field of science that focuses on economic and social development through application of agriculture. It is directly linked to rural areas. With a Bachelor in Agricultural Science, students take the first step toward a rewarding career. Agricultural Science is linked to many other scientific disciplines, such as Biological Science, Environmental Science and Animal Science. It helps in improving the nation's crop production and its sustainability. Students pursuing a Master’s program in Agricultural Science will also learn about new areas of biology.
Agriculture has always been the mainstay of our economy. This sector employs more than two third of the labour force in the country and is a major contributor to the national economy. It meets our basic need for food and also the requirement for most of the raw material needed by the manufacturing sector. 'Serve the Land' and 'Feed the Hungry' is the main concern for education in agriculture field. It is a vast and diversified field, offering numerous career options in specialized areas, with good career prospects, like Horticulture, Floriculture, etc. The main aim is to prepare agri-professionals for a career that introduce them to wide range of opportunities in this flourishing sector.
According to one study, it is estimated that the annual requirement for agriculture professionals by 2025 would be around 78,000. Considering the present supply, there would be a shortage of about 40,000 professionals, thus giving a clear indication of a bright future ahead for agriculture professionals.
There are plenty of government as well as private sector jobs available for BSc Agriculture graduates. They can be appointed as Research Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, Agriculture Officer, Agriculture Loan Officer (in Banks), Production Manager, Operations Manager and Farm Manager with State agriculture departments. In the private sector, agriculture science graduates may find jobs as managers at plantations, as officers at fertilizer manufacturing firms, agriculture machinery industries, agricultural products marketing firms, food processing units etc.
After doing BSc Agriculture, one may also go for MSc Agriculture and take up a teaching job, or even go for a PhD and build a career in Agricultural Research.
Agriculture matters to the future of development. Economists point out that agriculture is four times more effective than other sectors in reducing poverty. It can even be a gold mine for young entrepreneurs. Besides, agricultural research needs young mind to initiate innovation. A very small percentage of our students opt for an agricultural major, only because they don’t realise its potential. Somebody needs to point out to them one basic advantage that agriculture has over other sectors: other industries might need down-sizing, but feeding the world is a job that isn’t ever going to face recession!
Besides, with the present government’s focus on agriculture, experts say that there will be more jobs available in agriculture and allied industries, than ever before. With the industry on the ascent, but with college students uninformed about the opportunities , there is an understandable shortage of talent in this field.
